E-Filing IRS Form 7004 for Your Business Extension

Form 7004 is used to extend the deadline for filing tax returns (certain business tax, information, and other returns). The IRS Form 7004 offers businesses an extension of time that can vary from 5 to 7-Months extension after the due date of the tax return.

To avoid any late penalties, be sure to file your extension before the deadline. Penalties from the IRS can be as high as 25%. Deadlines may vary for every business type please refer to the official IRS deadline page to verify your deadline date. However, any business taxes must be paid before the deadline or on the deadline date of the form.

Form 7004 does not provide an extension to pay any owed taxes. Form 7004 only provides the business to obtain an extension of time to file the form. The IRS does not accept multiple returns on one Form 7004. You must file a separate Form 7004 for each tax return you are requesting a tax extension on.

Note: If you file Form 7004 on paper and file your tax return electronically, your return can be processed before the extension is granted. This may result in a penalty notice.

What is IRS Form 7004?

The IRS Form 7004 tax extension is titled Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns. For these returns, paper filing can be somewhat of a hassle, as you must file a separate form for each return. To eliminate the hassle and save your valuable time and energy, the IRS approved E-filing of the Form 7004.

Tax2efile is an IRS authorized E-file provider. When the IRS established that E-filing would be an acceptable format for Form 7004, Tax2efile was among the first to offer this service nationwide.

The IRS offers Form 7004 as a request for a tax extension. This tax extension, depending on the return you’re requesting an extension on, will give you an extra 5-1/2 or 6-Months to file the return. The IRS does not accept multiple returns per Form 7004. You must file a separate Form 7004 for each tax return you are requesting a tax extension on.

What is the maximum extension period?

  • Generally, the filing period is extended by six months unless you file Form 1041 or a C corporation within June 30 of the taxable year.
  • Trusts and estates that file Form 1041 are eligible to receive an automatic extension of time to file.
